Hiking Trails

The best way to explore Lahemaa’s nature is to set aside enough time, pack comfortable hiking gear, and embark on discovering the local hiking and nature trails. Lahemaa’s trails vary in difficulty and character – from one-to-two-hour bog loops and the 45 km Oandu-Ikla hiking trail to a rocky kilometer leading to Purekkari Cape, the northernmost tip of mainland Estonia. The forests of Käsmu peninsula invite exploration both on foot and by bike. Lahemaa is also traversed by the E11 long-distance hiking trail, whose Baltic section is known as the Forest Hiking Trail, and which begins in the city of Scheveningen in the Netherlands and ends in Tallinn.

For Lahemaa’s hiking trails, we recommend bringing a guide, whom you can find here.

When venturing into nature, always ensure that your impact on the environment is limited to your presence. Sort any packaging and used napkins according to waste management rules. Keep the hiking trails in Lahemaa clean!

With its pristine coastline, dense forests, picturesque lakes, and charming traditional villages, Lahemaa offers a diverse range of natural and cultural wonders to discover. We will stop in Viru bog, Oandu forest trail, Sagadi manor park, Võsu beach and Jägala Waterfall.

The trip starts and ends in the city centre of Tallinn.

The price includes transport from the city center and back and guided 8-hour daytour. There must be at least two people for the 8 hour trip to take place. Children up to 12 years have special price.

Hikes at Linnumäe Nature Farm
If you like to lead a healthy life and enjoy nature and refreshing water, we can offer you the best recreation options.

We offer you guided hikes in the Ohepalu bog. After a day in nature, you can enjoy a relaxing sauna.

In the summer, you can spend the night in a tent or a barn and sleep on hay. Our Õnnela Quest House, however, is open all year round.

Good to know: Linnumäe Nature Farm is a cotter’s hut located on the edge of the Ohepalu bog. Eight generations have lived there and there is still no electricity. The hut is the starting point of the hikes and a perfect location for a sauna.
Hiking in the Ubari Landscape Conservation Area and climbing on cliffs

In the Ubari Landscape Conservation Area, a hike awaits you that is half nature trip and half a small adventure film – only you are the main character.

We travel along beach and forest trails, listen to stories about rocks, springs, and biodiversity, and inject some adrenaline along the way: safe cliff climbing (guide and equipment provided). This is not gym climbing – here you learn how to move wisely in nature, maintain balance, and notice the layers of the landscape like an open book. During the trip, you will get tips on how to read tracks in nature, which plants are worth noticing, and why Ubari is protected.

We choose the pace according to the group; suitable for friends, work teams, and adventurous families (children with a parent). Bring comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and a water bottle. Come, laugh, learn, and recharge with real forest silence – only about 30 minutes from Tallinn.

If desired, a tea or picnic break, and nature guide tips on how to notice nature, are shared.

Safety is a priority: helmet, climbing harness, and guide support at every step.

Hiking in Viru bog

Visiting a bog is fun in every season – bogs are incredibly diverse and colourful (except for in winter if there is a lot of snow). In order to understand bogs better, visit them with a guide.

The hike is 3 or 6 km long and can be completed on a boardwalk. During the hike, we will admire the landscape from an observation tower, visit a peat milling field, take a look at and touch various plants (depending on the season), as well as talk about the related lore and the significance of bogs for the biota.

You can order transport or catering for an additional fee.
The price depends on the size of the group, the length of the hike, and additional services. Ask for an offer!

Vaatlus sisaldab:

  • Paadisõitu
  • Päästeveste
  • Kerget suupistet ja jooki

NB!

Järve pindala on 4,1 ha, keskmine sügavus 4,9 m, suurim sügavus 9 m. Järve kirde- ja idakallas on kõrge ja metsane vallseljak, mujal on kaldad madalad. Põhjakaldale on rajatud supluskoht. Lõunast voolab järve külmaveeline kraav, väljavool on põhjaotsast Jänijõkke. Järve taimestik on vähene. Järv on lisatud Terviseameti avalike supluskohtade nimistusse.

Huvitav teada:
Jäneda Linnamäe
külje all asuva kauni järve ääres on kunagi oma suvepuhkuseid veetnud inglise kirjanik George Herbert Wells.

Järvesoo and Savalduma Bog snowshoe hike for nature enthusiasts

The bog shoe hike in Järvesoo and Savalduma Bog is a journey for those who want to visit the bog in an eco-friendly way.

With bog shoes, we move to places where the boardwalk does not lead and learn to notice how the bog works: its stages of development, bog life, and species’ relationships with the environment. We observe fascinating “sinkholes” – places where the bog seems to swallow water – and discuss why this is important for the entire area’s ecology.

During the hike, we read signs: tracks, plants, moss, water bodies, and bird sounds. If someone asks, “Is this a bear track?” we answer honestly and with a smile. We learn why walking in the bog is done in a dispersed manner, how bog shoes reduce trampling on the bog, and the difference between a bog pool, a bog lake, and a bog mound.

During the break, we brew tea from bog water and natural plants. The hike is suitable for families, groups of friends, and teams.

Important: We have joined the “Best Practices in Bog Shoe Tourism”, and therefore, bog shoe hikes do not take place from April 23rd to June 24th.

Järvi-Aegviidu hiking trail

The 27 km-long Järvi-Aegviidu hiking trail showcases the beauty and charm of Kõrvemaa’s nature. The trail is open all year round and is accessible from the Aegviidu Visitor Center.

The hiking trail has boardwalks for 3 km and partially overlaps with the Paukjärve and Jussi nature trails. The 2-3 day journey includes several camping areas, campfire sites, bogs, and lakes where you can swim. The trail is marked with red dots on the trees.

If you are looking for a peaceful and scenic place to hike, camp, or enjoy nature, the Järvi-Aegviidu hiking trail is a great choice!

Juminda Cape and camping area

The tip of Juminda Peninsula, or Juminda Cape, located in Lahemaa National Park, is interesting because the tip of the cape continues under the sea. The cape continues with a “chain” of large rocks, which actually move in the event of a large wave. It does not get very deep. A wonderful beach awaits you at the end of the peninsula.

You can also see a memorial erected at the tip of the cape to the ships and people who died in the Battle of Juminda in World War II. The memorial is built with empty mines.

Right at the tip of the cape is the Juminda camping area, which has campfire sites. Nearby is Juminda Lighthouse and a hiking trail.

Kadrina terviserada

Parkimine on mugav – lähedal asub parkla 10 autole.

Tule üksi või koos perega – Kadrinas on liikumine tõeline elamus ja parim viis puhata!

Karepa Beach

The peaceful and lovely Karepa beach is located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. The sea is relatively shallow and the beach is sandy, but there are also small boulders. The coastline is, for the most part, straight, but there are also three small capes.

Karepa became a popular summer destination as early as the late 19th century, when several noblemen built their summer cottages there. The holiday destination is still popular among locals and tourists.
Karepa is home to the house museum of the artist Richard Sagrits, a herbal garden, and Kullo Youth Camp. The nearest town is Kunda.

Karepa medicinal plant gardens
Karepa’s medicinal plant gardens provide visitors with the chance to find out about plants that are used in cooking and medicine as well as a range of interesting vegetables. The gardens also organise year-round hiking trips to find out more about medicinal plants growing in the wild, plus seminars on medicinal plants and natural therapy, at which the gardens’ own teas are offered.
You can also order food produced using herbs from the gardens and buy a range of herb products, medicinal plant teas, souvenirs and Verner Luke paintings. If you wish, you can also receive personalised advice on plant therapy, camp in the gardens or make use of its picnic area.

Käsmu hiking and cycling track
The Käsmu hiking and cycling track is situated in Lahemaa National Park and is 14 km long. It starts by the local chapel and ends in the car park at the other end of the village. It does a circuit of the peninsula and is designed for those who love to spend a good deal of time in the natural environment.
Käsmu nature and cultural history trail
The Käsmu nature and cultural history trail looks at the development of the Käsmu peninsula and Estonia’s biggest natural accumulation of rocks. Beginning in the car park next to the chapel, the trail is well marked with signs and is 4.2 km long; trees along the trail have white stripes painted on their trunks for guidance.

Käsmu itself is one of Estonia’s most beautiful seaside villages, and the local museum provides an excellent overview of its maritime history.
Käsmu's field of boulders
Hidden away amongst the trees towards one end of the village of Käsmu is Estonia’s biggest field of boulders: massive stones, the biggest standing 4.8 metres high and measuring 14.7 metres around (and known as ‘The Hermit’). The boulders were deposited here as the Finnish and Swedish continental ice shelf retreated around 10,000 years ago. Today the field can be viewed from the Käsmu nature and cultural history trail.
Did you know…? *Käsmu boasts the largest concentration of stones and boulders of any place in Estonia
