Hiking Trails

The best way to explore Lahemaa’s nature is to set aside enough time, pack comfortable hiking gear, and embark on discovering the local hiking and nature trails. Lahemaa’s trails vary in difficulty and character – from one-to-two-hour bog loops and the 45 km Oandu-Ikla hiking trail to a rocky kilometer leading to Purekkari Cape, the northernmost tip of mainland Estonia. The forests of Käsmu peninsula invite exploration both on foot and by bike. Lahemaa is also traversed by the E11 long-distance hiking trail, whose Baltic section is known as the Forest Hiking Trail, and which begins in the city of Scheveningen in the Netherlands and ends in Tallinn.

For Lahemaa’s hiking trails, we recommend bringing a guide, whom you can find here.

When venturing into nature, always ensure that your impact on the environment is limited to your presence. Sort any packaging and used napkins according to waste management rules. Keep the hiking trails in Lahemaa clean!

Canoe hikes at Linnumäe Nature Farm

If you enjoy a healthy lifestyle, beautiful nature, and refreshing water, you will surely find that we have the best recreation options for you.

We offer 1- and 2-day canoe hikes on River Valgejõgi.
After spending the day in the wild, you can enjoy a relaxing sauna. In the summer, you can spend the night in a tent or a barn and sleep on hay. Our Õnnela Guest House, however, is open all year round.

Good to know: Linnumäe Nature Farm is a cotter’s hut located on the edge of the Ohepalu bog. Eight generations have lived there and there is still no electricity. The hut is the starting point of the hikes and a perfect location for a sauna.

Canoe hikes on River Valgejõgi by Lahemaa Hiking Centre

Lahemaa Hiking Centre, located in Loobu village, was established to promote  a nature-friendly lifestyle and spending time in the nature.
The canoe hike takes place on River Valgejõgi, one of the most beautiful rivers in northern Estonia. The hike lasts 3–5 hours, depending on your wishes. On the river, we might see waterfowl, grey herons, or beaver hills and their traces. If we are lucky, we might see other wild animals on the shores, as well.
All participants will be given a canoe, a life jacket, and a paddle. Instruction will take place on the spot. After the canoe hike, you can spend some lovely time in the cosy fireplace hall and sauna in Hääde Mõtete Maja (House of Good Thoughts) or talk to your friends while sitting next to a campfire.
Come and put yourself and others to the test!

Canoe trip "Valgejõe Jungle"

Do you enjoy new experiences but also value safety and good company? Then this canoe trip is just for you! You are invited to spend a day in the embrace of nature, where time takes a calmer rhythm, and everything else takes a backseat for a moment.

You will be guided by experienced tour guides who know the Valgejõe River like the back of their hand. They will teach you proper paddling technique, share interesting stories about local nature and the river, and ensure you feel comfortable and safe throughout the trip.

The sun sparkles on the winding river’s surface, and birdsong can be heard over the water. We will travel 5 to 10 kilometers and stop to enjoy the silence, tea, and snacks.

This is an ideal way to spend a day with friends, colleagues, or family, enjoying the benefits of movement and nature. Canoe trips are also suitable for young people aged 10 and up.

Christmas hike and festive atmosphere in the forest with a nature guide

The Christmas spirit is born in the forest faster than on a shopping mall escalator. During Advent, you are invited to a Christmas forest hike with a nature guide, suitable for families, friends, and colleagues. It is a peaceful and authentic way to kick off the Christmas season, away from the hustle and screens.

The hike begins at the Pure Water Theme Park, where you can enjoy warm tea by the campfire in a teepee before and after the hike. Then we head to the state forest, where we look for a suitable Christmas tree and bring winter food to the forest inhabitants. In the forest, there is no rush. We move at a leisurely pace, make stops, listen to the sounds of the winter forest, and look for animal tracks.

During the journey, you can try your hand at truly useful skills: making a fire with matches, building a simple shelter, and preparing a small meal over the fire. For those interested, the experience can be enhanced with a visit from Santa Claus. The hike is suitable for both adults and children, and dogs on a leash are welcome.

Create a Christmas experience that brings people together and creates memories that last longer than wrapping paper.

Clean Water Theme Park trip "Adventure in Nature" with a nature guide

The adventure trip “In the Nature of Hakkamasaaja” is for you if you want real skills, not just “I watched it on YouTube.” It’s pleasantly humorous, practical, and a bit adventurous – just the right amount of “real life” without excessive drama.

What do you actually do and learn?

  • Build a shelter from branches with your team (yes, it really stands!)
  • Light a fire safely (the forest is not a barbecue area – we do it wisely)
  • Brew delicious herbal tea from forest plants
  • If desired, prepare soup over the fire
  • Practice how to act if you are lost or need to manage without electricity and water
  • Get simple tips on how to think in a crisis so that instead of “panic,” a calm action plan emerges

Suitable for young people, families, friends, and work teams – especially if you want to combine teamwork, movement, and a “let’s do it” feeling. Children and pets are also welcome on the trip.

Glass kayak adventure trip on the Viitna lakes

A trip with a glass kayak on Viitna lakes offers the opportunity to discover the natural world from a completely new perspective. The transparent kayak creates the feeling of floating above the water, while beneath you unfold the patterns of the lake bottom, the flowing rhythm of aquatic vegetation, and fish curiously slipping by. It’s a visually captivating experience that allows you to enjoy nature comfortably and dry, without having to immerse yourself in the water.

Viitna lakes are known for their glacial origin and exceptional clarity. The light falling on the lakes creates a soft glow that reflects the surrounding forests and adds a sense of peace and timelessness to the trip. The surrounding Viitna landscape reserve offers natural biodiversity, spring-rich shores, and beautiful views, where each paddle stroke reveals a new picture of the local nature’s diversity.

If desired, you can explore the lakes at night – the play of light beams in the clear water creates a completely different, almost fairy-tale-like atmosphere.

Glass SUP experience hike on Viitna lakes

A paddleboarding trip on Viitna lakes with a glass SUP offers a unique way to explore the lakes. The transparent paddleboard allows you to stand above the water while clearly seeing below – the lake bottom, aquatic plants, and the movement of light in the water.

Before heading out on the water, you will receive brief instructions and the necessary equipment on site. Afterwards, you have approximately one hour of independent paddling, moving at your own pace and making stops if desired.

We definitely recommend bringing a phone to capture the views and underwater details. Viitna lakes are known for their glacial origin and unique clarity. During the ride, the views gradually change, offering variety and the opportunity to observe nature more closely.

Suitable for couples, families, groups of friends, and teams – and also makes a great gift for nature enthusiasts.

The quarry is “different water” – clear, deeper, and with its own unique atmosphere, where you can peacefully glide and enjoy the views. You can stop, look down, and take photos – the see-through SUP instantly adds a wow effect to pictures and videos.

On-site, you will receive a short briefing (safety and basic board handling), and then you can independently go for a 1-hour ride at your own pace.

The service includes renting the glass SUP board, paddle, and life jacket. Suitable for couples, families, friends, and teams, and also makes a great gift.

Guided hike in Viru bog

My childhood home is located in this neck of the woods. Even though there was no hiking trail in Viru bog at the time, our family often came here to pick berries and mushrooms, and my father for work.

Now, there is a lovely hiking trail where you can explore the bog. There is a foot path leading through a pine forest, a boardwalk in the middle of picturesque bogs, an observation tower, as well as a picnic area near the Kalmeoja parking lot.

Discover all of this with a guide!

On our way back to Tallinn, we stop by Jägala Waterfall for a photo. The largest waterfall in Estonia is a wonderful place to visit at any time of year, but it is most impressive in winter when the freezing water creates stunning ice art.
